What is Uro-gynecology?

Uro-gynecology, also known as Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS), is a subspecialty within gynecology and urology that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor disorders in women. These disorders often involve a combination of gynecological and urological issues related to the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, and rectum. Uro-gynecologists are specialists who are trained to manage these conditions, which can impact a woman's urinary, reproductive, and bowel functions.

Common pelvic floor disorders that fall under uro-gynecology are:

Urinary Incontinence: This can include stress incontinence (leakage of urine during physical activity or coughing) and urge incontinence (sudden, strong urges to urinate).

Pelvic Organ Prolapse: When the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, descend into the vaginal canal due to weakened pelvic floor muscles, leading to symptoms like a feeling of fullness, pressure, or bulging.

Fecal Incontinence: Involuntary leakage of stool, which can be associated with muscle or nerve damage in the pelvic area.

Overactive Bladder (OAB): Frequent and urgent urination, often accompanied by incontinence.

Pelvic Pain Syndromes: Chronic pelvic pain that may be related to various causes, including musculoskeletal issues or nerve disorders.
